Water Pump Replacement

Should i pull the radiator to change the pump or no? Theres so many darn bolts on the thing its kind of hard to get at em all with the radiator in. Also does the diesel repair book have anything on changing the pump? If so i will buy one but otherwise theres no use.

what ever is easier for you. I tend to booger up radiators if I dont get them out of the way but you can do it with it in there

If you got A/C and an automatic with a auxillery tranny cooler then pulling the radiator is quite a job in itself.

Probably best to just be careful and not damage the radiator.

I have done 2, one on my 86 & one on my 84 and both times I did not remove the rad but you do need to remove the rad shroud.

Have the replacement water pump near by and take note of where all the bolts are, in fact Dave S had a good idea....as you take the bolts out, put them in the new water pump [top 2{?} need to be siliconed]

This woud be a very good time to replace all your belts, hoses, take a good look at the vacum pump, power steering pump [****replace the return line] and even the batery cables?? lol

Also when you change it, look at the timing gear cover.
There are four bolts that screw into the timing gear cover plate.
They must have thread sealant on the threads when you install them.

Also this is why I say to put each bolt in the correct hole in the new water pump as you remove them. After they are both on the ground, transfer the bolts to the old pump. Then install each one in the new pump as you bolt it on. If you install the wrong bolt in the wrong hole it will hit the timing gears. Severe engine damage may result.

P.S. you might want to consider the lift pump as well?

Bass, I can relate, when I did my 86 water pump I was off the side of a highway, mind you it was in the summer....when I did my 84, I screwed up when I was re & reing the IP, took off the the timeing gear duhhh. So off came the water pump and every thing else....I had my 86 running, so I just took my time and replaced everything except the lift pump.
