Question Which to Buy?

Hello all, I have searched but can't quite find the thread I am looking for. I need some advice from you expreienced Super Duty guys/gals. I am in the market to buy one of the two:

2005 F350 Crew Cab Dually
XLT every option available except for a moonroof and heated seats.
27,000 miles $32,000. I'll add heated seats later.

2002 F350 Crew Cab Dually
Lariat, every option including heated seats but likewise no moonroof
51,000 miles $28,500. This one I'd need to repaint the lower half to get rid of the Arizona Beige.

I am a Porsche owner and the general rule with 911's is to get the newest in the best condition that you can afford so I would presume the same applies here?

My delima is which is the better truck? My intuition is to go with the XLT because adding heated seats is cheap and easy, and I like the fact it is under Warranty, newer etc. Also, the 2002 has a 5th wheel hitch bolted in the bed so it is not as virgin as the 2005. I am just concerned about the troublesome 6.0 engine.

I don't care about tow ratings or power because I won't be pulling anything heavy. Possibly a 19' Air Stream but no 40' boats if you know what I mean.
Also, I'll probably get an air suspension such as a kelderman, to make the ride softer so I have take that into consideration also when comparing the suspensions. I guess I should just go with my gut and drive them, look at them, etc and see which knocks my ***** off best but I wanted some advice here.

Respectfully,
Dan

Well, you have two good trucks to choose from. I'm not sure about prices but the 6.0 issues had been resolved on the '05's. The 7.3 is a strong and proven motor. Either way I don't think you can go wrong, but I wouldn't want to have to have a truck painted that I had just paid good money for, and I am partial to the 6.0. If I were you go with the '05.

IMHO...get an Oasis Report on both SD's from your local friendly FORD dealership. Just need the VIN. What an Oasis will tell you is the history of the vehicle regarding warranty and TSB work performed.

The '05 with the newer style tranny, front suspension, and larger brakes...will offer MORE for the dollar over the '02.

I agree with your concern with the 6.0L PSD. But as you mentioned...it does have the remainder of the 100k warranty. That is why the Oasis is so important to you!

Good luck with whatever you choose...and enjoy your NEW SD!

Well, I found out the 02 sold so this Sunday I may go check out the '05 XLT. The Oasis report checked out fine. From looking at what these trucks are seilling for, it seems that $33,000 out the door is a good deal? Most of the ones I have seen for sale with around 29,000 miles or less are going for mid 30's. On a side note, any of you in the Seattle area? I am moving from LA, California back to Seattle and just wondered which dealers are good with diesels. I heard the dealers in Bellevue suck. Also, those with duallys up there, do you honestly think 4 wheel drive is necessary?

You may want to check into a new truck. '06's get some pretty substantial rebates and incentives, and if you can get A Plan, you should be near $36k for a new XLT. My '03 F250 Lariat CC 4X4 PSD was $36k A plan, but the rebates were low at the time. I just received a mailer fo $6k in rebates on an '06 and $4500 for an '07

I didn't realize the rebates were that good right now. I'll check into that.

Dually isn't that great as far as traction goes. If 4x4 is an option, I'd definately look into getting it, especially if you'll be driving in any snowy conditions. Dually is great for towing a heavy load, but not so great for getting up slippery roads.

Got pics?

Just food for thought, I know that the 02 already sold... but if you were looking into repainting the bottom half of that truck you'd be looking at about $1500-$2000 for the job. A couple of quotes I have gotten for a full job on my truck from a few reputable shops around B-ham were in the $4500-$5k range. Painting is expensive if you want a good job. And I would suggest going for the 06-07 model year. If you are financially capable, wouldn't it be nice for you to be the first person to drive that sweet truck home? It would also be nice to know everything that the truck has done and been through. Anyways, hope ya get what ya want!

SwetePete, I don't know how t opost pics. and I decided I a mnot going to get the XLT because it isn't the exact truck I want. If I a mgoing to spend $33K on a truck I want to get one with all the options I want and not compromise. I am talking to a few Ford dealers now to see is they can find the exact truck I am looking for. Maybe I'll go with a new one if I can. I'll let you guys know.

At those prices I would skip the used stuff and go for something new. I picked up an 07 SD PSD Lariat SC FX4 in October and paid just over 37000 for it. Sticker on the truck was 47, so I think I did pretty good.

Had everything I wanted in it.

I spoke to one local dealer and a loaded dually Lariat invoice is about 44K, so that is just too much for me. I calculated that with taxes, fees etc, and 3.9% at 72 months and it is too much for me.
