I Have A 99 250sd 4x4 The Top Pate Just Started To Leak For No Reason.
I Got A Rebuild Seal Kit For It But I Talked To Two Machanics And They Are Not Sure About How To Do The Rebuild.
Any Way For Some Dumb Reason It Stoped Leaking.
Anyone Ever Have This Problem Or Do A Rebuild For Sterring Box.
Thanks Kevin

The steering box that Ford puts on our trucks is mediocre at best. Hell, I’m highly disappointed with the complete steering system. It puts too much pressure on the steering box and if you’re having problems your box leaking it’s because the seals are the weakest link. It seems to me that, with Fords resources, they could’ve designed a true crossover/highsteer system. That would take literally tons of pressure off the steering box. And that’s where most steering box problems come from. It’s compounded when you add bigger tires, any lift, and any driving that isn’t made on flat level surfaces. The 05 and newer design is a good step forward but won’t work with our leaf springs and track bar. Dynatrac’s conversion kit is even better yet, and fixes a couple other problems under that front end, but it was a little out of my budget. What I did was make a call to AGR. I installed their steering box and steering pump. Although it didn’t fix the bump steer and binding that all Super Duties have they have made a world of difference in the drivability of my truck. Steering effort was greatly reduced and I don’t have as much feedback through the wheel. The box is fairly stout and uses better quality seals so it shouldn’t develop a leak as easy…….but to answer the question that you really asked. It isn’t hard to rebuild your stock box. I did it twice. Just pull it out, take it apart, and replace the soft parts with what’s included in the kit. I would suggest though just replacing the seal that is leaking and leaving the others in place. It will save a little time and a lot of trouble. If you do take everything apart be careful to keep everything align right. It’s a pain in the butt to get it right if you don’t. Good luck.
