Hi - I'm hoping that someone might have some advice for me. When parking my 1976 F-250 something broke in the shift lever and the truck is stuck in drive. The shift lever does not engage anymore at all. Since I couldn't go forward (there was a car parked in front of me) I simply turned off the engine. My question is - can I start the truck while in drive if someone stands on the brake? I don't want to get underneath to try and mess with the linkage and get my work clothes soaked with muddy cold water.
You will have to bypass the neutral safety switch in order to start it. If it has the switch on the column, that will be easy. If not, you'll have to unplug it down by the trans of figure something out. Maybe somebody else has more insight.
76 trucks should have the switch on the column. Top of tube down next to the firewall.
You probably broke the pot metal shift collar at the top of the column. The part you need is about 20 bucks and it's a pretty straight forward install. You'll need a steering wheel puller and that's about it for the specialized tools.
or since you're going to have someone with you standing on the brakes just go under the hood and cross the solenoid with the ignition on, MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT STAND IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK, but rather off to the side. A screwdriver or wrench is all you need! If this process doesn't make sense to you, I wouldn't recommend trying it...
Thanks Everyone. Did the seleniod jump with a friend on the brakes, while the divorced diff was in neutral and got it started. 4 guys pushed it out and I shifted at the diff into 2nd and was on my way to the garage.
( took a couple tries - 1st attempt made the coolest ringing/grinding sound!)
