Speedometer not working.
I have an '86 Ford F-250 diesel 4X4 manual transmission (warner T-19) and I believe the borg warner transfer case. The speedometer has been erratic for some time and has finally given up alltogether. I replaced the cable and still no speedometer. The gauge works but upon inspecting the cable operation during driving, I noticed that the cable was not turning. I took the cruise control sending unit off and noticed that the gear was loaded with black crap in the gear grooves. I cleaned it all off and reinstalled it. Still no cable movement. I removed the sending unit again and stuck my finger into the opening and felt the gear to see if I could notice some wear. It had a definate depression in the middle of the gear and I was also able to move the gear freely with my finger in either direction. This was supposed to be a rebuilt transfer case less than a year ago BTW.
Is there anything I can do besides take the transfer case out and install a new sending unit gear and a new speedometer drive gear on the output shaft?
I was considering an after market system, but, the cost was to high. I also did not want a bunch of magnets and a pickup system hanging out under the truck.
Any suggestions? How hard would it be to drop the tx case? It doesn't look that hard. I usually do all my own work on my truck and my cars. Any other ideas?
The best of the New Year to all. Good health, Happiness and Good Fortune.
Thanks.
