Turbo backpressure valve

I’ve been doing some reading about how the turbo works on this truck. Can anyone explain how the backpressure valve fits in?

It is on the outlet of the turbocharger, and it is basically a butterfly valve close to the turbine wheel. The valve is a circular disc that closes and has just one corner flat, to let about 5-10% of the exhaust through. This major restriction in the exhaust allows only some to escape, which keeps the heat in the engine, and helps it warm up faster. The sound you get is the same amount of exhaust flow passing through a very small orifice. Here is a picture of the valve in the open position, i will look for a closed one.

It is on the exhaust side after the exhaust turbine and housing. It is nothing more than a flapper valve in the exhaust, When under the hood you will see a rod coming from the housing, this is the notoriuosly leaky acctuator rod.

Hope that helps
