Ignition Coils - problem to head off?
Some reading online about my new 2000 Expy, I note a lot of posts on other sites about ignition coils dying. Then much wailing about them costing over $100 each and another hour of labour to replace each. And, in the documentation file the seller of my vehicle gave me, I do indeed find a bill from a few months ago for 8 new ignition coils for a total bill of $1,000.
Now, I have seen a couple of posts saying these things are just $50 each for aftermarket parts, and change easily for anyone used to working on trucks. So maybe much of the wailing is just from non-handy people getting taken - which would be the seller of my vehicle.
I've also seen posts referring to water leakage or heater hose leakage being at the root of the failures.
I've scanned 7 pages of posts here on Ford Trucks and can find no mention of ignition coils on Expys.
So - question - is this the general experience of FTE users? And if so, ARE they easily changeable by us gear heads? And if the source really s fluid infiltration, has anyone developed a protection system to avoid it? Otherwise, I might just buy a couple and keep them in the toolbox......
Thanks.
They are doable by us gear heads, 6 of them are fairly easy (1-6) 2 can be a pain in the butt (7 and 8,especially 7).
Protection system? Use dielectric grease and make sure your hoses dont leak on them.
