Coolant and heating issues

I have a 1978 E350 RV with a 4.9 and 1bbl carb. All stock. After warm up and a long ride (never over heats even on a 250mi trip or more) the upper radiator hose swells up.

Also with a new heater core from Advanced Auto, the heater will not get hot. The upper hose from the thermostat wil get hot but the lower from the water pump to the core will not get hot and doesn't even seem to get any coolant.

Is your cable from the heat control panel opening and closing the valve? even if the lever on the valve is moving, you gotta make sure the axis pin is turning with it. If it isn't, your valve is simply siezed shut. replace it.
As for the hose, replace it. It's tired and wearing out.

The hoses are new. There are no heat control valves inline to the heater core. Only the in and out line from the motor to the heater core. This is what confuses me. It has a new thermostat. So from what I can make out is the heat is controled by a door on the inside that allows only so much heat in?

does this unit have AC?

make sure the blend door is able to close completely, and that it has a good seal.

When you replaced the thermostat, did you install it with the spring facing you? a backwards thermostat could cause many troubles lol...
I'm not too familiar with the six, but maybe someone else here has a better idea.

I asked around and the common answer I got from a couple guys I know who do this stuff as a business said the Heater core may indeed HAVE a "BUBBLE" and need to be purged of air.

So much work to do on the new addition that I just got to the RV this weekend and got everything fixed.

First fixed the valve cover gasket that was the original 1978 one and was it ever hard. So no more leaks. Disconnected the heater hoses and back flushed the heater core as well as flushed it the correct way. Didn't really seem plugged. Took off the thermo housing and the thermostat was in correctly but there was a partial blockage to the heater core outlet and cleaned that out. Put in the new thermostat, new radiator cap, topped off the radiator, fired it up to temp and all is working fine. Even after a 20 mile test drive it even runs cooler.

Thanks for all the info in helping me fix this problem.

Thank YOU for letting us know it HELPED!!! I think I had read once somewhere about that heater passage having that tendency to collect sediment; Good job!

Now that it is running okay, make sure the bottom radiator hose is getting fairly hot once the thermostat opens, to make sure the radiator is not plugged.
