I have a 1985 F150 4x4 that we just put a new engine in. It was completely rebuilt mostly stock with a mild cam. After the truck gets started it run smooth as a clock. Plenty of power, 4x4 works smoothly, etc. Yet when you are cranking it over it is a little rough at first (as from the starter sounding rough). The more you have to crank the more it feels like it's pulling down the engine like the starter is trying to lock up. The battery is new. Vibration kicks in, as from the starter, when it starts to pull the engine down. Yet when it catches and the engine starts everything is very smooth. When you let off the gas while driving it will die. Then you hit the key and the vibration returns from the starter and it's pulling hard against the engine. Finally it starts and is smooth again while it's running. It feels to me like my starter is trying to lock up. Truck is an automatic. Any suggestions or knowledge on this would be MOST appreciated.
No it has nothing to do with a cold start problem. The truck starts fine, but as it's cranking there is some definite pull on the engine from the starter. Also a lot of vibration only while the start is turning. When the engine starts and runs for an hour or so it will run fine as long as the throttle is open. Once the pressure comes off the gas it starts to die like something is pulling on the engine. Then when you hit the key to start it back you feel the pulling from the starter and rough vibration, but once it kicks over everything is fine mechanically. I had a starter lock up in my crew cab that was similar to this but it was a stick shift. It was pulling down the engine, but after replacing it everything was smooth again. Thanks for the comment though.
