Question Engine Switch question?

We have a 1987 351W out of a F150 that we want to put into a 93 F150. The 93 now has a 4.9L FI in it. How tough will it be to replace that engine with a freshly rebuilt 351 W which has a carb? The truck also has one of the Mazda/Ford Transmission will it bolt up to the 351W? We are concerned about the wiring harnass. Thanks for the help!

The tranny will bolt up to the 351, but you will need a flywheel that matches the 351 and a new clutch assembly. If i read the post right you are planning on having the motor in that truck run on a carb? if that is the case then it should be fairly simple. The guages in the truck run off of seperate sensors than the computer, and the computer really only deals with the running of the engine. I would suggest pulling the ignition module and distributor out of a carbed motor as the fuel injected one is controlled by the computer. I am not sure if the psom and eec computer run independantly of each other (psom is the powertrain control module that runs the speedometer and the rear anti lock brakes and uses the vss in the rear diff for determining speed), so you might have to do aftermarket guages or live with the check engine lights. A aftermarket fuel pressure regulator would be a must since the fuelly motor runs on about 36-40psi and your carbed motor runs on like 8.

Going from I6 to V8 in these trucks isnt that hard. The rad is different, the motor mounts are different(but the stock crossmeber already has holes for the mounts, you just need the frame side and the motor side), and obvioulsy exhaust. Good luck.

I have the tranny with the 351. It was an automatic though. I would prefer to keep the standard shift. I think I have the radiator as well. Will I just have to switch out the flywheel in the ford / mazda tranny. I have headers for the truck and will just run the exhaust out behind the cab. I have the mounts as well. Thanks for the help, I'm sure I will be back to ask more questions. Kevin
