Master cylinder

What I have read in posts is that my Master Cylinder is failings I'm going to replace it.I don't want to get into trouble here.Is this something a non mechanic can do.
From some of the posts I have read I could be opening a can of worms here.
It is a 77 F250 custom single caliber.
Thanks Don

It seems like almost everything turns into a can of worms these days, at least with me lately. The master cylinder is usually not a bad project, make sure you have fresh fluid on hand, maybe alternative transportation if you have to chase parts or find one more worm than expected. A hand bleeding the brakes makes things go a lot easier.

Make sure you have lots of Dot 3 or Dot4 brake fluid to replace the complete system.
Bench bleed the Master cylinder in vise.. before installing
The MC should come with 2 tubes and fittings to facilitate this.
You Need Jar with about an 1" of Brake fluid in it.

after bleeding re-Cap the fittings and install.
check pushrod length from booster to verify correct length.
(left diagram on this page.)

The rest is a normal bleeding procedure .

It does not require a lot of mechanical knowledge. Be sure to use penetrating oil around the lines going into the mc and let it soak a while before taking the lines loose as these ole trucks develop rust around the flare fittings and you will turn the line with the flare fitting. Be sure to use flare wrenches to remove the lines so you won't round them off and follow the directions that are included with the new/rebuilt mc for "bench bleeding" as well.

I just replaced mine and was a little over a hour and half to do it. I didn't even bleed the system as I had a full hard pedal when finished. Makes you proud to know you can accomplish these repairs when you finish. Good Luck!

Million was typing a reply with same advise lol

I wouldn’t put a rebuilt MC in. A new one is only about 40% more and it is a good investment. I fought leaky rebuilt master cylinders for years and finally gave up and put a new one in, no more problems after that.

Also, I wish Dennis had posted the info on the pushrod adjustment years ago. I replaced the MC on my 77 in 1985 and had low pedal for years. I asked part stores, mechanics, etc. all over the country why my pedal was so low. No one could answer my question. A few of the mechanics said I had major brake problems and offered to look at it. (For a substantial fee of course) I ordered a Detroit Iron CD from one of the FTE supporters and read the brake section and there it was the answer to my question. I now have full brake pedal, and what a good feeling that is.

If you look at my post you will find that I have only been a member since 2004. It took a while to learn how to find things on this web site. And I am still learning. But you are right, if people would research the site before asking questions they would probably find the answer beforehand. But you remember the old adage "there are no stupid questions". (I think it goes something like that)
