Engine Codes

I pulled the codes on my explorer today and they read as follows (key on, engine off) 1, 1, 11, 11, 1, 66, 66. The first one was just a flash as soon as i turned the key on, then about 4 seconds later the second one flashed but it was very faint, then the rest of the numbers went just as explained on http://www.thorssell.net/hbook/eectest.html. According to the info, code 11 means system checks ok. code 66 means Vane Air Flow (VAF) or Mass Air Flow (MAF) signal low, Transmission Oil Temperature (TOT) signal low (possibly grounded). So where should I start? Can I test the VAF or MAF? As for the tranny code, could it be that the engine was off that it threw that one? Thanks for the help, Alex

If my understanding is correct...the first two "ones" are called "fast codes". They are meant to be picked up by a diagnostic tool and contain all fault information stored in the EEC. You should disregard these if you're using a test light, CEL, or volt meter to get your codes. I think if you're using a voltmeter the pulse only jumps to 2 or 3 volts and not the full 12 volt sweep of the needle like you get when you get a real code.

When you first started the test you should have heard a series of clicks in the engine compartment. The EEC is checking sensors/actuators and if you have a fault, you will get a "hard fault" code instead of the 11's (called an On-Demand code). These are faults as they exist now, or when you started the test....then you get a separator code...the next "1" between your 11's and 66's. Ford actually describes this as a code 10...a "one" pulse and a zero pulse. Go figure.

The next event (your 66's) are memory codes. These codes were set the last time your engine was running, or earlier...a fault history if you will. Since you had no On-Demand codes, theoretically your 66 fault doesn't exist anymore.

I would run the KOEO test along with the KOER as well to try to isolate what you have. Check the forum for cleaning the MAF. It never hurts to do that if you do it correctly, and it only takes a minute.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I think Ill try cleaning the MAF and also Ill disconect the battery and reset the ECU and see if the code goes away. Thanks again.

Well i just went out and disco the battery and cleaned the terminals while I was there. Hooked it back up and started the engine. I let it run for about 5 min and no CEL so I guess it must have been a stored code or something.

It has to run a drive cycle before it sets codes, unless it is a solid misfire. It is going to take some time.....

Well I have been driving for two days now and still no CEL so I'm pretty sure it's fixed until the next thing comes along. Lol
