What lubricants would you suggest for a 1996 F 150 4x4 with 87,500 miles on it. It has a 5.8 Liter(351W) Should I use high milage oil? What type of ATF should I use and what should i use for the differentials.
Synthetics are more exspensive but I find them better in the long run. Try running a litre of lucas oil in the engine as it will help for better lubrication at start up and prolong engine life. For the diffs definetly go synthetic as it will allow you to run a lighter oil and give you slightly better gas mileage, but I am not sure how much and if you will save more on fuel than the price difference in oil.
Certified Old Phart speaking here - just my humble opinion. Stick wth the dinosaur oil in the crankcase - stay with the same brand for as long as you own the truck and use Motorcraft oil filters. If you do decide to change the tranny oil to a synthetic than do a COMPLETE flush and fill so that all of the old tranny fluid is purged. Personally, again IMHO, stick with what the manual calls for (I'm pretty sure that it is not synthetic) in your specific application for the tranny oil and change it and the filter every 40,000 miles or so. For the pumpkins - sure - go for the synthetic touch.
Again, i remind you, these are my opinions only - I'm not a big fan of synthetic oils - YMMV
stick with regular conventional, 5w20 or 10w30, nothing wrong with synthetic or synthetic blend, but over time eats the gasket seals on your motor, espeacially ford, most of the gaskets are just rtv sealant, anyways, 75,000 is considered high mileage. as far as differential, gl5 80/90w is what ford trucks take and the transfer case just get some multi vehicle atf, might be more, but you can use it in any vehicle

Synthetic doesn't "eat" gaskets, it cleans better than conventional oil, so what you see is where the gasket is gone already and conventional oil is sludged up - being cleaned. The leaks were there but plugged by the sludge, synthetic cleans it.
ok so you spend extra money on full synthetic, just to change it every 3000, you put full synthetic in an old vehicle, it will knock all the slugde off and clog it up somewhere in the motor, next thing you know your tearing it apart, i dont think it would happen, but its possible. i know people with 427+ hp that are built by ford racing, the always recommend 5w30. i mean conventional still has additives, with no worries.
