Howdy, all. I asked this question in the steering forum but got no response. I hope it's not because it's too stupid. Here goes, anyway. If I just suck the fluid out of the p/s reservois, refill, drive some and then maybe do it again, is this a reasonable way to change the fluid? Or should I just take it to a shop?
Believe me, I'm not trying to be funny here. Truck is '73 f100 302 c4 2wd.
Pull the return line. Direct it into a bucket. Remove the PS belt and turn the pump by hand. Keep the reservoir full. Have someone move the steering wheel lock-lock. Keep adding fluid and turning the pump until the fluid runs clean. Put the filter below in the return line. Reconnect the return line and fill the reservoir to the mark with fluid. Replace the PS belt and run the engine for 1 minute turning the wheels lock-lock. Turn the engine off and let it sit for 30 minutes. Check the reservoir for bubbles. Restart the engine and watch for foaming/bubbles. If they appear stop the engine and wait another 10-30 minutes for the reservoir to clear up. Start the engine again and repeat.
