Question Which one 92 or a 93 ???

My wife and I live in Denver and just need a 4x4 to get around in for the winters. It doesn't have to be anything special and I'm not interested in anything fancy. There is a 1992 explorer for sale for $1700 and there is a 1993 XLT for sale for $1995. I'm wondering which one would be better buy they're both pretty much the same, aren't they? What should i look for and what are the weak points, that's all i care about. They only have to start, run and have working 4 wheel drive, the rest is just icing on the cake.

The auto trans is a weak point on the 91-94s, so factor that in. Depending on maintenance, they usually start to go around 125-150K miles. Test drive it when the motor/trans is stone cold and make sure there isn't any slippage/hesitation between gears. Make sure you check reverse.

Other weak points include... radius arm bushings and rust in the rear dog legs/quarters. Make sure the 4wd drive works properly. Just because the dash lights come on doesn't mean it works properly.

The trannies are a weak point in just about all years, incl 2006. That's why I went to a Chevy with an Allison.

Good point. However, my 92 Expl is still doing well. But it's a manual. Manual everything. Had fun with it this last week or so in all the snow in Denver area. (Littleton actually.)

I agree the trannies are the weak point that is why I got rid of both my earlier (91 and 95) Explorers when they had 150,000 to 175,000 miles though I never had a problem with either one. I'd go with the one with the lowest miles and the best maintenance, if available.

THe '92's had 'bare' sides while the '93's had a small skirt under the doors. This was because the paint would wear out under the passenger doors due to gravel. I had a '92 that the dealer repainted under warranty due to that (it still eventually rusted through in that location). The '93 should have better paint there than the '92 unless running boards are on the '92.

I'd agree with Mason - lowest miles and best maintenance. The difference in design is almost indistinguishable. Maybe the one with the best stereo?
