Hey guys, I have been tossing this idea around for awhile now. I can get a 95 E250 for next to nothing tranny is shot, but I just want the 351 out of it. The guy is a good friend of mine, showed me all of the mileage slips this thing was getting consistant 19mpg. My 92 f150 already gets 18mpg but the 302 lacks some when it comes to towing, runs great but that roller 351 sounds good to me.
The odds and ends well to start the van has 180k on the clock and it was a work van so its probibly alittle tired. I was thinking go through it rebuild it, if it needs it. Being my truck is a 5speed I am going to have to get a computer for it, were the 351 3/4tons batchfire still in 95? I woulden't mind doing SEFI MA to it.
For the 95-96 351s are they really that much better like I hear? I keep hearing better mileage, great power, tow very nicely. I don't want to swap out my 302 and have a gas hog like most 351s I know the 351s in 2wds were really quick but still sucked it down. Guess I'm needing help weighing this out my 302 is in good shape but keep a back up on hand for that day. Give me some imput guys, hopefully won't have to worry about that day but hopefully if it does my 77 will be done that restoration project is just too much fun 400cubes of anger.
The 95 351 should have a roller cam, or at least provisions for one. It should also still use batch fire injection, unless the van happens to be mass air (which I seriously doubt). A guy up in the 87-96 forums, Frederic, says that the newer computers are much better because they have a more aggressive timing curve than the older 351 computers. He could tell you exactly which computer to get.
Yeah I went and checked it out today more I look at it I can get a short block for fairly cheap. Even ebay has them for under $1000, yes the van is speed density. The 351 sounds great but also weighing around if I'm towing just get a 3/4ton use it stricky for that, been playing around the idea of a 95-97 f250 4x4 x-cab get it with a hurting 460 and build another mean 400 rollerized, chi heads oh boy either way this is going to be exspensive.
the 5.8 will get the same mpg as your 302 would pulling thats for sure. also get the power steering setup from that van as well. it will be the saginaw pump which is so much better then what your currently running. check out www.fordfuelinjection.com for info on what ecu to run. you could run a 5.8/c6 ecu as well.
