Hello All
Don't ask why but i just rewired my 74 to use a simple off-on keyed switch for the coil power and a simple push button the engage the starter solenoid. Yup, just like way back when. What I could use is some info on the way the old vehicles with this kind of ignition setup were originally wired. The truck starts and runs Ok I am just a little puzzled as to why the alt-reg output is now lower than before I replaced and simplified all of the wiring.
Might look at the posts in the electrical section. There were several extended discussions on alternator wiring that would apply to your application. Need to start off by doing a through wire trace, especially the ignition-switch-to-regulator circuit. Come back in the electrical section and tell us what you have.
Good Luck
The reason it was wired the way it was, is that a starter can draw a lot of amps. Too much to go through the ignition key switch. That is why a wire goes from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid where more amperage can be applied to the starter cable. Newer Ford do use a solenoid because the circuits have been upgraded to handle the amperage. Newer permanent magnet starters draw less amps and new engines with electronics start much sooner then say, flat heads, y-blocks, FE's, etc.
Why you do not see the amp draw may be because that circuit no longer goes through the amp gauge? Maybe?

Charles,
I also heard the best Mullet were from Pensacola Pass - from Joe Patti !!! Is he still in jail ??
Mullet out here from Choctawhatchee Bay are also pretty good. The big ones jump in your boat.
The Electrical Systems/Wiring section is on the conference page under "Misc. Conference".
Think I may have seen you on the Vintage Mustang Forum. Good info there too, but it really needs the ford-trucks.com format to be more effective.
