I have removed a 3.0 V6 engine and the transmission from a 98 Ranger. I am going to install a rebuilt 3.0 long block. I want to do as much preventive maintenance now while the engine is out. Please give me any advice you can on how I should proceed. I am going to change the clutch and the water pump. Let me know if I should do any thing else. In addition, if anyone has any detailed pictures of the installed engine please send them to me. There are allot of vacuum lines and I am sure I will have problems getting them back into the correct location. Any other advice would be appreciated.
I would suggest replacing all of the cheaper sensors like the crank, cam, dpfe. I assume you plan on using new spark plugs and wires. I would replace all the cooling system hoses while it's apart too. you might want to tell your engine builder to remove the pilot bearing on the end of the crank while it's apart, and you can pop in the new one before you put the motor in so you dont have to fight it underneath. Replace the slave cylinder whiel the trans is out, and also change the three rubber plugs on the top of the trans behind the shifter with steel ones, to prevent future leaking.
just a note, for future reference, while your taking apart stuff.. label it.. it will save you time and hassel when putting it back together, and note pad and a camera would not be a bad idea either.. so you can take notes of the tricky difficult stuff, and pictures of what it looked like at different stages of the project.
you can pick up a diy book for you "year/make/model vehicle" at just about any parts house for around $20 or so. and it has diagrams and step by step process with pictures to help. they arent a cure all and can be very vague about some things. but they help way more then they hinder you.
Just making sure you have a stick, since the slave and the three plugs are only part of the standard transmission.
I'd recommend at least checking over if not rebuilding the heads, valves, springs, rockers, pushrods, and cam. Make sure the oiling passages for the heads are nice and clean. Wouldn't hurt to put a new timing chain in it either.
Definetly the cheapy sensors, they're so easy to get to while it's all out.
If it's a stick and the clutch has seen better days, getting somewhat worn out, might as well do that all while the engine and transmission are out. Definetly install the pilot bearing as Jim recommended.
Some NAPAs have the steel plugs, some don't. My local one didn't, so I just removed the rubber plugs, sealed with RTV, and replaced. No leaks.
