Yeah my holley 390cfm has been fussy too the electric choke kept coming on even when it was fully warm. And i can never really get it to idle right without running rich.
This reminds me of an old friend from a car club I used to be in. Richard was from England and had two Broncos that were identical except for the engine. One was a 302, the other a 300. One day he told me in a heavy British accent "When you hit the gas with the 302 it makes a lot of enthusiastic noises, but nothing really happens. With the 300 it doesn't really make any noise but does enthusiastic things." If you encountered a 351 powered Bronco that felt underpowered it is possible that it had lousy gears in it. The main difference between the 300 and the V8's is that it doesn't really seem to care what gears it has as long as they are reasonable. The 2.73 geared trucks seem doggy, but the ones I've driven with a 3.08 or numerically higher have all done great.
That is true, some bread trucks came with that combination also. My dad had a couple of them.
I know a lot of people that kicked themselves for trading in their 300 vehicle for a 302 or 351 vehicle. They realized too late that the torque is what made them go.
i was thinking (foolishly apearantly, haha) of swapping my 300 for a donor 302, after reading this thread ive decided against it. i want to keep what it has to offer for trail riding, but the reason why i wanted to trade for the 8 was to build on it. how do you build on a 300? i have yet to see any performance sites that offer upgrades for a 300, just the V8s, seems like they dont like us 6ers, haha, but in addition to parts interchange how does the 300 react to outer engine compartment upgrades, like exhaust changes, tire size changes, 4x4 conversion(my truck is 4x2 Manual trans) if anyone knows please help me with this one, haha
The 300s benefit from just about any mod you can think of. My 300 is punched .040 over, RV cam, header, aluminum intake, carb, ignition. I did most of my mods one at a time, everything I tried just made it better and better.
Try Summit Racing, Offenhauser, Comp Cams, Crane Cams...do a lot of searching and reading and reading and reading through this Forum. the FSP Forum, Bronco and Mustang Forums ad infinitum...Google can be a good friend too. Then ask yourself what you want to accomplish with your upgrade/mods and start selecting those parts and proceedures that will get you there. And be ready to answer that question to anyone you are talking to about the mods you want. You are certain to be asked. Good Luck!
Don`t forget Classic Inlines. The` new aluminum head for the 240 and 300 ci engines is almost ready. They also have an aliminum hed for the 144- 250 engines.

I hate to break the bad news, but it appears that the aluminum head is for the small block 250 cid I6, not the big block 240-300 cid I6. I read all over that link looking for something to do with the 300, but I could not find the magic numbers I was looking for.
