All I did was replace the stock muffler with a glasspack that fit inthe same space I instantly noticed an overall increase in performance and gas milage. Not to mention that most people here in Germany think I have a V8 under the hood now.
I just checked mine on a trip to Myrtle Beach, SC, and I got 25MPG, averaging the same speed. I also have a 3.0L, 2WD, with a Gibson stainless single side cat back, and OEM PAPER air filter!!
I'm getting the same gas milege i did when my truck was stock. The reason i'm not getting the 25 like you do, is most likely due to the 2 inch coil spacers in the front, and i'm running bigger tires. My truck came with 225 70 15, and im running 235 75 15. Those 2 things will drop it down a little. Plus, i'm in So Cal, you cant drive anywhere, without hitting at least one grade on your trip, and i have to drop it into 4th to make any grades (3rd gear if my Harley is in the back). 23 is fine, the best on got on my last truck, was 14.7 MPG on the highway. Of coarse it was a 78' Chevy silverado, 350, 4 barrel carb, 3 speed auto.

That's next on my list. I have a buddy that's done this on a couple of his 4.0 Rangers and they've both sounded great. For $30 it's a great deal too. We also noticed the same results in performance. You don't always have to spend a decent buck to get a decent bang.
I can't imagine running a glasspack on the 4.0L or any engine smaller than an 8 for that matter. It just doesn't sound good, IMHO, sounds very raspy and small...it's easy at higher RPMs to tell it's not a V8, to me anyways.
I take it you guys haven't tried it? The cats on these things ae so restrictive they don't alow the glasspack to sound raspy. It just sounds a little more "opened up".
Yea, i'ld say it has a better sound than flowmasters delta 40. i agree these cats are too restrictive, plus they need to be cleaned/replaced too often(when you mod it.)
i vote for the glass-packs as well. i have run them on 4 cyl. to BB v-8 engines. each haveing their own sound and tone. and $20 a piece vs..$100+ and then install...hmm for the money glass packs take my vote.
(also if you heat the packs up to full operating temp. and then hit with cold water the glass inside will crystalize and blow out. making a hollow chamber with a baffle. wich can increase the volume of them and make them rezonate. but when droppin suddenly off the rpms they snap and pop alot more than if left alone. which i personly like the snaps and pops, giving it an open header sound with out actually runnin open headers.)
