Slept in this AM so I didn't get as far as I planned today. Did pull out the new shrinking disk to give it a try on the rear fender. Good news and bad news! The good news is WOW that thing does miracles for something so simple and inexpensive. Anyone who is doing body work, this is a must have! It took down high spots in no time at all and showed up any low spots. Take a pick hammer to the low spots. Doesn't matter if you make them look like a bag of walnuts, hit em with the disk to smooth em out. It worked so well I played with the fender the rest of the day dinginging up every low spot an leveling it all off. The disk also works like a power planishing hammer leaving the panel with such a shiny finish that I could see my reflection! The straightened fender is now to the point that it won't even require any filler, just a swipe of catalized spot putty!
Now the bad news: First it is extremely noisy!!! Think speeding railroad train trying to make an emergency stop noisy. Time to invest in a couple of pairs of ear muffs! Also wear eye and face protection, altho the disk is smooth metal sparks do fly. Second bad news had to do with the previous repairs I mentioned where brazing was done to fill some sort of holes. The vibration of the disk and the heat generated caused the brass to crack and start chipping out (another reason why NOT to braze any body work) so I had to stop, cut out all the brass and weld in steel patches. At least that gave another excuse to test out the shrinking disk some more!
Kevin, looks like we will be tackling the other rear fender next weekend. I hope we don't run into any more brass, but now I won't even try to work around it, just cut it out right away.
I'm ready to go. I must have signed off just before you logged in early this morning. I also slept in for a change, so all I got done was end of year at the store.
