'36 Update

The moment is coming today to do some firewall trimming on the '36.

Funny how the SBC that was in there required no moddifcation...but being that the oilpump is in the front of the engine on the 5.0 I have, unless I get the engine to sit a good 4 inches further back, I'd have to have the 5.0 sitting too high in the engine bay for my liking...so I'll trim the firewall to be able to get the front of the oil pan to clear the front cross memember and set'er in there.

After I get it in there and sitting, I'll mock up a seat in the cab and check for leg room (it's good to be short) and make sure it's not going to be an uncomfortable position for the gas pedal, since the tranny BH will be set back in the cab.

If all fits well and is comfortable, I'll be good to go, if not...well, i'll just have to save up and look at an IFS for the frontend in order to run a lower front x memeber and give me clearance for the engine. I can't trim the front crossmember, since te traverse springs mount to it in the center of it.

I'll put some pics in my Gallery later tonight after get busy with the plasma cutter.

My best laid plans...wnet over to my dads place to grab the plasma cutter and he says while you're here...", 9 hours later I'm about 75% done lengthing a set of axles for his boat trailor.

SOn of a gun, good thing is I'll hit his ace early in the morning, then get back to my place and get started cuttting, grinding and welding.

Wish me luck, I kinda hope it's too cold out for him in the morning when i get there...or who knows what else I'll end up doing.

Man, I HAVE to get this engine and tranny set before the 1st...just have to, ya know?

Mike:

Wouldn't a late-model "rear sump" setup help? Like this one:

I would have recommended that pan also. I had that in a '78 Fairmont and dropped it into a '84 Mustang. It was designed to fit over the crossmember in these cars and since it has both a front and rear reservoir, the rear is not quite as deep as the the older style pans. Of course ground clearance in the truck is not a problem, but it might help over the steering linkage. My guess if you go with an IFS, you may likely still want that oilpan (and the pickup tube is different -- get both)

In fact it sits so well in the Mustang that when I crashed an oil pump. I was able to lift the engine up a couple of inches and slide the pan out to replace the pump.

Unless there's a shorter oilpump available, it wouldn't help me any...I pulled the pan on the 5.0 I have, and the oilpump takes up 95% of the front sump in depth.

I wonder if the rear sump only engine came with a shorter OP?

Somehting to look into today before I get too crazy with the cutting

Sorry, I should have read above you said 5.0 (which indicates the late model). I am suprised to know that you are having trouble getting it in. But I guess if the oil pump area is what is giving you trouble that pan wouldn't help (I guess they still did have to do some engineering to get the suspension to fit around the motor in those cars :-).

As I thought about it though, I had done a lot of parts swapping back when I did have those 2 cars I mentioned above. I thought that the 2nd oilpump I put in the car was from a '76 Granada with a full rear sump.

I checked NAPA online and they do list the oilpump for both engines as being the same part number COP 6011081 . They do list separate oilpans so you can check out if you want. The '76 F100 also lists the same oilpump. You probably can do that to quickly check other older vehicles also, but my guess is that the oilpumps are not going to change much :-(

Yeah, I couldnt find a shorter pump...so I guess I'm stuck with "my plan"...no issues, truck will handle a bit better with the engine a few inches further back than needed, and as low as I can get it.

Aprreciate the help though...

But, still didn't get a chance to work on it today, spent all my time on a set of axles...about two more hours of weldng and grinding and it'll be behind me.

Dang, building stuff sure does take a long time.
