I removed the muffler on mine, (used a 4' straight pipe, same outlet location), & I like the sound, not too loud since it still has the cats. Might be my imagination but seemed to have a little more torque. My buddy liked the sound enough he did the same to his '01.

you guys are insane.

the 3" flows enough exhaust gases for a motor making 400+ hp, the straight pipe shouldn't effect your performance. you might go deaf though

you'll still have the cats restricting flow and keeping backpressure on the exhaust valving. lowering the pressure will help make more hp, but in this instance, you'll need to put high flow cats on to get lower backpressures. the straight pipes won't do that for you.

Unless set up and tuned expressly for open exhaust, the straight-pipe thing isn't the way to go. It's hard to tell just exactly what the cats provide, but an engine needs a little back-pressure for scavenging. As the exhaust pulse leaves the exhaust manifold, it "pulls" additional exhaust gasses with it. Without the scavenging effect, the cylinder doesn't expend as much spent gasses and contaminates the incoming air-fuel mixture. That's the reason for the balance or "X"-pipe on exhaust systems...it pulls more gasses out. Reduced backpressue will also cause the engine to go way lean - bad. Like I said, the cats MAY provide enough restriction to avoid these problems, but without a dyno and precise monitoring of the air-fuel ratio, you could burn a piston and/or valve.

Most engines will provide max horsepower when running right on the edge of lean/too lean, because the engine is at it's most efficient...it's burning almost all the fuel/air mix. You gotta remember though that an internal combustion engine relies on the fuel-air charge to aid in cooling the cylinder because excess fuel cools. Thats why an engine running on the ragged edge feels like (and probably is) making more horsepower.........until it blows up!

Not too loud, no problem in cab. Didn't lose power, my truck didn't lean out either.
