I'm a newbie to the forum world, but thought I should get with it especially with a new truck purchase that I have concerns with.
I signed the bill of sale last night on a 2004 Xlt Supercrew 4X4, 4dr, with 21,000k. Its in their shop right now getting it's out of province inspection ( susposed to be very thorough ), Canada, eh.
I came home and began studying these forums, and it created some worry in me about brakes and other powertrain issues. It seems that in rougher climates these brakes go early and routers warp. I'll get the remainder of the warranty , is this warranty good enough to cover these issues on going? Its only going to last 60k or a year more.
I just want to know if I'm in for a bunch of headaches? Am I in for changing my brake pads every 20k or less? What other power train issues should I be watching for?
Appreciate your thoughts.
Brakes are very dependent on how they are used. Some of us wear them out quickly and some of us don't. I found I warped the rotors on almost all of my company cars but never on my personal ones. A lot of it is due to driving habits. Some people had powertrain issues but most didn't. We hear mostly from the people who had problems. My 04 only has 17,000 miles on it but the only issue I have had is a differential noise that arose when it was almost new and the selling dealer didn't have anyone qualified to fix it and another dealer handled it for me.
I have yet to find anyone in person who has had issues but when there are over 2.5 million of the trucks on the road (since the redesign) spread throughout the entire country, there will be problems.
Like osbornk said.. you see more problems here as a percentage than over all owners see. Most people come to the internet to complain. I am sure your truck will be fine.
It's actually not going to be used in a harsh way, but a harsh climate, I'm up in Edmonton Alberta, snow and ice for 6 months.
It's more for farm roads in the winter and loading things here and there. We don't have trailers nor are we going out to the oil patch.
But thanks for your input, it makes sense.
Watch you rotors. The 04's have had alot of problems. I had my rotors calipers and pads all replaced under factory warranty at 29k. The replacement rotors are larger.
The service dept said the rotors on my 04 were defective. And they have had alot of 04's with the same defective rotors. There is a TSB addressing the rotor problems. The TSB shows a picture of the old defective rotors and a picture of the new larger rotors. I'll look for that TSB and post it for you if I can find it.

thanks that's awesome.
This is the benefit of posting on here.
Take that TSB into the dealer and tell them that you experience braking vibrations WHEN TOWING HEAVY LOADS. I understand you don't tow but they don't know that. They also will not be able to reproduce that condition and like my dealership will be inclinded to exercise that TSB. It worked for me. New rotors and new calipers. Even though my only symptoms were some scoring on the rotors, I wanted the upgraded ones installed.
We all KNOW there are problems with the original rotors so I suggest doing everything possible to get them replaced - on FORD's nickel.
Enjoy your truck! Of course, you will find persons with problems/concerns on this forum, but you will also find that most of us really like our trucks. Any truck will have some problems, but I do not believe that Fords have more than any other company. But, there are more F-150's with over 250K miles than any other truck. Add that to the faact that these are the best selling full size trucks for over 25 years running; what does that tell you? Good luck, and enjoy the ride!
