replacing gears
hey guys, i have a 78' f-150 4x4. i just put some new 35" tires on it replacing the old 33" that were on there. i noticed that i might need to replace my gears. i think my gear ratio is screwed up. it just seems more sluggish than it used to be. i just took on the freeway the other day and it took me forever to get up to speed. im rebuilding a 400 i bought recently to replace my 351m thats in there now. will this save me from putting new gears in my truck? and if i do have to replace them....do i have to take the axles off from the truck? thanks --ryan

Well even though 35's are 2 inches larger than 33's. they are still a heavier tire and are harder to balance. I had a 2000 Dodge ram lifted with 35's it still took off pretty good with the stock engine. As for a stronger engine it will accelerate better, maybe the 351M just isnt enough for the those 35's.
If you want a differant ratio get a differant drive pinion and ring. Its simple but it might change the speedo but if you drive the truck alot you will know how fast you are going just by the feel and not the speedo.

do you know what gears you have now your truck originally came with about a 30-31 inch tire now your running a 35 if your truck originally came with 3.55 gears now you are running about the same as if you had 3.0 gear with 35s you'll want a minimum of 4.10 gears for a daily driver with some off road use if you into mudding or tight trails 4.56s most late 70's 4x4s came with 3.55s for a standard gears with the 351m

hmm..i dont know exactly what gears did come factory in it. so really i all i need is a new ring and pinion for the rear and front axle? or just the rear? if i took the differental cover can i access the ring and pinion through that? my truck is a daily driver with a little off road use. so 4.10's front and rear might work then? thanks for your time---ryan
