What is a good video to get for me and my son? We are going to try to rebuild a 1963 Ford step side that I drove back in high school. I really don't know what I am doing and need to learn.
Well welcome to the site you are in the 2004-2007 F-150 and Larger trucks maybe head over to the 1960-1966 forum just down the page on the forum index you will probably get a better answer there
Your previous post was replied to as well, if not aware there is a notify me via email setup just below and it emails when responses to posts are posted. I think you'll find the folks on this forumn much handier than any video available.. BOL sounds like you have plenty fun ahead.
swamprunner, Hot Rod magazine has just introduced a series of restoration videos that run about $7 each. the first one shows the disassembly process and some tool usage. They are working on a 1970 Chevy ragtop but all vehicles are basically the same. They sent it to me on a trial basis with an invitation to view it and return if not happy with it. I found it to be rather basic but if a person didn't know one end of the screwdriver from the other, it might get them going in the right direction. Steve
Beside video's; which are a great area to start; I also recommend getting a basic mechanic level manual covering your truck era, I don't know if chilton or haynes has one for 63 models; but the web is wide open to find one. Additionally aftermarket reproduction companies, like MacAuto parts, LMC Trucks, Dennis Carpenter, and several others will supply you with a free catalog over the e-net, just type in Ford and a wall of site's will open up. If your like me a "Shade Tree level Mechanic", you'll going to get alittle burn while building; but that's part of the game. As mention above this (FTE) is truley the best resource you can get.
I think its awesome for you and your son to have a project with alot of meaning behind it. Time together is priceless...
Like Customcab said, get a manual. But also there is a book by Tony Brownwell called "How to restore your FORD PICKUP". Don't think that it will answer all you questions on restoration but it is a great source of info for removing, repairing, and rebuilding specific parts and pieces... info not in the manual. The best price is at walmart.com (about $15 I think). Make some great memories with your son, just remember that it's more about the ride than the destination!
Another good source is to go to local car meets / cruise nights. Talk to guys who've done various things to their own rides and get ideas & information on what works and what doesn't. You don't need to find exact model/year, because most of the approaches needed work across makes, etc. Yes, there ARE a few things that Chevy guys can be good for.
