glow plug relay

I have a question about the glow plug relay. I tested it becuase the truck will not start when it is cold at any temp between 20-50 in the last month. The relay has 12volts on one termanal and nothing on the other side when you turn the key on so i know that it is bad. My queston is why when you plug the truck in it will start because the block heater is only heating the collant. I am wondering what the connection is between the block heater and the glow plugs. Thank you for the help.

When you plug the block heater in it does exactly that. The engine stays heated while the truck is off and when you go to stat it you don't need the gps to heat the cylinder to ignite the diesel. Diesel uses compression and heat to ignite instead of a spark like gassers. The gps heat the cylinders when the engine is cold, if you plug your truck in the cylinders are already heated so the gps don't have to do there job.

What ponch said.
If you want a better understanding of how a diesel engine does it's work, go to Wickipedia or howstuffworks.com and read up on it.
It's fully explained there.

Scotty, just jump the large posts for about 30seconds with a screw driver or similar item with the key on in the WTS mode. Then it should light right off. If not, it could be more than just the relay. Also, do this with it cold and without the block heater to verify the test.

No, the PCM will not command it on if the oil is warm based on it's reading from the EOT or engine oil temp sensor.

I see all of you saying that the glow plug relay is fairly cheap, but I was quoted $ 236.00. Are they quoting me a price for the wrong part?

Calif. 7.3's require a GPCM(glow plug control module) which is solid state control of your GP's. It costs around $225. All other state's(?) use a GPR which is around $25-$75 depending on model/make.

I was quoted $120, from the stealership, but got one off E-bay for $45. so I will just buy to for one being a back up like the CPS, fuel treatment etc. same motorcraft part. NAPA was $71.
I am changing mine out this weekend also, cause its Montana and you never know when the Zero temps decide to come visit.

Keep that AIH relay in mind too in a pich. Your AIH is absolutely not needed. Mine is in a box in the shed but the relay is still on the truck. There is also Guzzle's mega mucho mondo relay.
