Anybody know how much of a bummer a '76 dash with no A/C is to pull? I'm talking the whole enchilada. Whoever had the rig before me Mickey Moused a bunch of wiring and also messed up the defroster plenum somehow. I don't mind taking the time to pull the dash. Better than a trip to the chiropractor from laying on the tranny hump.
I have the gauge cluster and glove box out already, and I noticed a couple lag bolts on each end of the dash. I didn't see any obvious spot welds, but there's some funky black sealer in the corners. Other than the brace and the steering column, there ain't much. Or is there?
I am working on my 74 F-250. Heater core/blower motor. Mine is not AC. The bolt that goes into the side of the cab that holds the passenger end of the dash seems to have broken the nut loose from the inside, and spins freely. Is there any way to access this nut? I have thought about sliding a hacksaw blade into the area between the dash and the cab, but what happens then? How do I get a new bolt to hold the end of the dash?
Sorry to jump on your thread, 1pump, but I think we are dealing with similar issues. The constant Oregon rain seems to cause some rust/humidity problems in our favorite old rigs.
Dash removal isn't to bad. Row of screws at top were vinyl ends, E-brake, steering col, brake support, bolts on left and right pillar kick panel area. I have left the heater controls in the dash and unhooked the cables from the box or you can take the control head loose and leave it in the cab. Just some wiring . I love working on these things, it's so much easier than the newer. If you break one of the weld nuts loose you can cut the bolt and replace it with a nut-sert in another spot close to the original and drill a new hole . If you take the heater box out can you get some vise grips up on the back side of the wed nut? Hope this helps.
