I thought about getting a big box with a smaller one inside and fill it with concrete but I have seen people get arrested for setting up a "booby trap" .. even though some loser is trying to smash it, if that loser gets hurt they can sue you.
It's a shame that you can be sued for defending yurself (or your property), but this one might be a good one to listen in on in the courtroom:
"Your Honor, I was minding my own business, just smashing a few mailboxes for kicks, when I struck this one with my bat and it broke my wrists... Please make them pay for my medical bills."
You won't get in trouble for hurting the kids breaking the law, it's the people that accidently get hurt that will get you in trouble. Like others have said here, if you reinforce the mailbox too much and somoene accidently hits it with there car and they are injured because of it you will be at fault. They don't let trees or telephone posts be put in close to the road because they could cause too much damage, so why would they want you putting a steel pole set in conctrete six foot in the ground right next to the road.
I know it sucks, but kids will be kids. I know I caused my fair share of hell around the neighborhood when I was a kid, so I put up with it more now without complaining too much. Just try to find a good sturdy rubbermaid box or something similar that doesn't cost too much and replace it again. Maybe try watching for them or setting up a camera like someone else mentioned. However, it would be fun to catch the the kids and give them a little hell too, like smokestone.
Well, I do have an 80lb bag of concrete mix in the shed, I guess I could remove the box after the mail comes tomorrow, straighten it and fill in with concrete and hope they come back for more by Monday night. It seems that they only target mail boxes that are out of view of the house that they belong to and any other houses in the area.
I also believe it is illegal to have a post that is cemented in or over a certain diameter steel. Also, I believe wood posts are supposed to have holes drilled through them at or near the bottom so the break away when/if a vehicle hits it.
Last winter, someone was driving(too fast for conditions) and slid sideways into my mailbox. It sheared the 6x6 post off at the ground(no holes drilled in it) and removed the side mirror of the car that hit it. I'm sure it did more damage, it hit with the front tire (broadside) and continued to at least the front of the door. Funny thing is, it did absolutely no damage to the box itself.
Is there a re-inforced mail box on the market anywhere? If there is not and you could come up with a good design you could really cash in on that idea.

I dont know where you live, but around here, telephone poles are literally an arms reach away from the window....
