NEED HELP!!!

I'm stuck in a parking lot I shouldn't be in when the sun comes up. It's a 56 F-100 with a 302 from a 79 F-150. My problem is when I went to leave the starter cranks the engine but it doesn't start. I have to unbolt the distributor from the block and move it towards the right timing to get the thing to start. But once I go to bolt the distributor back in, the engine craps out and it won't start til I move the distributor again. If I leave it unbolted I can turn the engine off and start it up again fine so long as it stays near the right timing. Any ideas would be extremely helpful. THanks
Craig Early

NEED HELP!!!

I would check the lead going into the distributor. In it's normal spot, you may have a broken wire or one grounding out inside the dist. When you change position by moving the distributor, it may make a connection to allow it to start. Check the wiring and if you have another dist. handy, change it and see. Hope this helps.

NEED HELP!!!

Thanks for all the help. It turned out the point gap had closed completely. I set a new gap with what I had on hand and the truck is running better than it ever did. I really appreciate the responses guys, Thank you
