Now that I have driven my new ride for a while I have a few questions about it. First off let me tell you what I am working with. I just bought a 1970 F100 Ranger. Is has a 302 and is an automatic. A previous owner converted it from the original 3spd on the column to an automatic. I do not know what type of transmission is in there. I am assuming it is a C4 since the C6 carries the big block bolt pattern. However, when I try to look up a speedometer cable for the truck with an automatic it lists it as a C6? Oh yeah, speaking of which, did these trucks have a two piece speedometer cable? Mine looks like it has two connected with a bracket on the firewall. Something else I'm wondering (and yes...I'm on a roll here lol)... does anyone know what the average oil pressure is on these 302's? It is a stock motor inside and out with a 2bbl carb. Right now after it is warmed up it is around 18-20psi. After this next question I'll leave you kind folks alone. I filled the gas tank up the other day (to a total cost of $36.60 @ $2.36/gal) and the gas gauge only went up to around 3/4 of a tank. What would cause the gas gauge not to read all the way? I don't like not knowing exactly how much fuel I have and it drives me nuts! Well...I'm done laying my issues on the table. Any help you guys can offer is greatly appreciated and returned.
I love the 78-79's. if the bell housing and trans are two peace than it is a C4 as they have interchangeable bell's it it is one peace than I would say C6. I don't recall ever seeing a two peace speedo cable housing in anything I can remember.
Fuel gauge prob is most likely a sticking float in tank. after dropping below where it is stuck I have found them to be OK to empty. Hope I was of some help.
The copper floats on the gas tank sending units are two pieces soldered together. Over the years, the solder breaks down allowing gas to seep into the float. The float is available separate from the sender (which also could be defective).
C0AZ-9202-A Float
C0AZ-9A011-A pickup tube screen...replace this, too
COAF-9276-A Neoprene Gasket ("O" Ring) Sending Unit...(some of these trucks use a cork gasket, but I can't remember the part #).

mil1ion yes they did make a c6 that fit small blocks they used them in vans and if you remember the 351 c,cj used c6's also. if his trans is al aluminum with the removabe bell that would be a c4 if the main case is castiron with aluminum bell and tail housing it would be an fmx if its all on peice from from to back all aluminum it be a c6
