Hi all, I just took ownership of a '84 F150 with a 300 4 speed 4x4. I actually drove the truck home but there is definately something not right. The guy I got it from said that the distributors roll pin on the gear broke and by the time he got stopped the damage had been done. He said that when he raised the hood the exhaust manifold was fire red. Obviously the timing was way off. When I got the truck home, I proceeded to pull plug wires until the back one didn't make a change at all. There is fire but not sure what is going on. I am wondering if it is valve related due to the distributor issue? Anyway, if I have to rebuild the head, what does that normally run? While I am at it, what would it cost to rebuild the whole engine?
While I am no ford guru like some on here, I will at least try to respond to your questions....How was the motor acting when you drove home? Was it shaking bad? What did the exhaust look like, blue or black smoke?
When the distibutor broke on the original owner, it might have swallowed a valve and in turn jumped time severely.
If the motor was run too long after, and it actually did get that hot....the motor could have extensive damage. My Inline 6 had over 200000 on it when it lost a timing chain, fortunately I was able to shut it off immediately, but in the end opted for a complete rebuild. This was about 10 years ago and I had a ford professional do the work, it cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 or 4,000. But it came with a 3 year unlimited warranty. It probably is a little less now.
The way I look at it, if the head is fried and you replace it, the rest is still old and tired...rebuild the whole thing if you want to get some more life out of it.
My 1987 F250 now has 246000 and runs like a sewing machine, it was a good investment.
