I just bought a 1994 F150 4x4 with the floor shifter and auto hubs. I know a way to test the manual hubs is turn the front drive shaft when they are disengaged and in 2wd and it should turn freely, does this test apply to the auto hubs too? I just went out and turned the front drive shaft and there was a little play but then it stops like the hubs are locked. Are my hubs toast or do they lock when the drive shaft turns a little? I am planning on swapping to the manual hubs anyway but i was hoping to make it through the winter first. Thanks.
I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of flack about this but after I cleaned and re-lubed mine, this is how I tested them to be sure I had them back together correctly. On a flat concrete surface, my driveway, I put my floor jack under the rear end and jacked the wheels off the ground. I got in, put it in 4x4 and slowly took my foot off the break. When it began to creep forward, I knew everything was working. I wouldn't recommend driving around the block this way but a few feet up the driveway seemed OK. Hope this helps.
It is easy, jack up the front wheels, (use jackstands) and with the transfer case in neutral, turn the driveshaft by hand. you should be able to drive the wheels forwards and backwards.
If the hubs are working properly, the axles will drive the wheels in either direction but the wheels will spin freely without driving the axles.
