I know this has been posted on before but I was just looking for updates on this problem. Have any gotten worse or any problems from this "piston slap"? Unfortunately I believe my 05 with 10,000 miles has come down with the same problem. I do use mobil one and wix filters but its definately knocking at startup when cold outside. Calling the dealer today.
That's what the dealer told me in 2001. So I traded my 00 Lightning with 5000 miles. It blew up a week after they sold it. Yep, seems normal to me... LS
my 96 4.0 explorer with 163,000 and my 2000 f350 v10 with 113,00 also my wifes 2003 f150 supercrew with 51,000 and many people i know with fords all have that same ford knock on start up, was told it was a ford thing. on my trucks it started around 50,000 miles.
I noticed my 5.4 making this noise at around 20,000 miles. Read about the piston slap thing on this site and I now have 92,000 miles with no change. The noise occurs everytime the truck starts after sitting over night, just more noticable when cold. Using Mobil One and changing every 5,000 miles. My boss has a Expedition with 150,000 and he states it has always made this noise...
Hi all what you are hearing is not piston slap or bearing noise its the timing chain follower gaining oil presure to pull the chains tight. This noise is heard all the time on FORD sohc or dohc engines
Never heard of this timing chain follower everyone has always mention piston slap. Is this some type of plunger that depends on oil pressure to tighten up the chain? What happens if you accidentally over-rev the motor at start up before the pressure has built up?
