I changed the fuel filters on my 6.0L powerstroke today. the problem i am having is the truck now will not idle or for that matter even pull its self down the road very far. The truck has the rough idle, some times choke its self out. now I have rechecked the filters, they are correctly installed no leaks, checked the fuel/water separator drain plug and found some gritty material in the opening. Also the upper filter on top of the motor usually has fuel in it, and is now dry(very little fuel in their now).. Please any HELP would be great.
remove the cap on the upper filter and cycle the key a few times. dont worry because you wont make a mess unless you dont watch the filter housing within cycling the key. it sounds like you have a air pocket. let the bowl fill up and then screw the cap on.

If you look at that upper filter housing, on the side and sort of facing the front left corner of your vehicle, there should be a drain plug that looks very similar to the one on the frame mounted unit. Both units use the same 6mm hex wrench on my truck. Use some kind of absorbent material and stuff it under that drain and around the filter housing on the side the drain is on, then remove the drain plug. Cycle the key to charge the fuel system as previously stated, but be aware that you WILL make a mess if you're not careful. You’ll get alot of fuel out of that drain and onto your absorbent material, but it shouldn’t be more than a couple of cups, if that. I hope this helps your problem. If you feel like you’re not getting this amount of fuel from the drain, you may have something causing a restriction on (or in) the fuel line. Definitely sounds like that engine is starving for fuel.
<O</OI do this type of procedure on my truck when I get the ‘water in the fuel’ light on the dash. For me, it seems to help in that it keeps me from having to crawl under the truck more than once or twice.<O</O
