i don't know how many people have tried this but this is what i did about the alternator bracket. i put spacers in and moved out from the block about half an inch to an inch, now my alternator bracket fits no prolem with my headers. if i ever take my headers off and go stock i don't have a butchered bracket. now it requires a different belt but big deal just get one size up from the one you have now and it should be good.
