Back up lights

I got a set of fog lights for Christmas that I'm going to use as back up lights. I already have them mounted to the truck, but have not wired them in yet. Would it be OK to wire them up to a trailer plug and just plug it into the 7-pin socket that's already on the truck rather than splicing into the wiring harness? I'd rather not cut in to anything if I can avoid it, but not sure if the 55 watt lights are too much for that circuit to handle. Another option would be to wire a relay in that picks up when the normal back-up lights come on with power taken from a hot lead off the battery, and have a switch wired in parallel to the relay so I could turn them on at any time by using the switch. Thanks for any input.

I would wire them right into the trailer plug wires, but you should use a relay while doing that. They would be a strain on your power if not. If you really want the switch go for it, it makes it much nicer when you need light for hooking up a trailer or doing work behind your truck at night. It is just a matter of whether you want to take the extra time to wire it all up.

I just installed a set of 55w lights before Christmas. I was told by someone here that the wire at the 7 pin is good for 20 amps. I cut the wire going to the 7 pin and wired them up from there. So far so good. Search a little deaper and you will find the thread, last post somewhere around 12-21-06. Philip.
