I have what is supposed to be a 77 high boy, the truck is a highboy by all means. But I was checking the vin to see what it was stock and guess what the vin comes back as a 77 1/2 ton. Which didnt surprise me too much considering the drivers door has been changed. (Yes the vin on the door and on the title match.) My question is can anyone tell me where the vin on the frame is?? And if you can get to it and read it without removing the cab or something like that.
All it says on there is top of right side rail somewhere on the front half. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it was for example by the cab mount, or if its under the cab. As much crap as is on the frame of this thing I would like to have some idae on where to start digging.
If anyone has seen how those VIN numbers were applied they would know why it could be anywhere along the front half of that framerail. It could even be all the way to the rear! I have seen it done by a guy running up to the side of the moving truck frame and catching it wherever he can. Heaven forbid if he had to take a bathroom break... There is no way to tell anyone exactly where to find it.
does it have a married (mounted to the tranny with a adapter housing) or divorced tranfercase (short intermediate drive shaft). If its divorced its a high boy.
Thanks for the info guys!! I knew when I bought this truck it was one of the Heinze 57 versions! I was able to find the vin on the frame, the tag on the cab and of course the one on the door. But as it is all three are different!!! Now my question is can I find out what axles, tranny and possibly the gear ratios came with the truck from the factory? I know how to decode the tags on the door and the cab but I dont know if it can be done with the vin alone. Basically I'm trying to go off the frame vin. The frame vin is F26HCX88281. Any help or info will be greatly appreciated!!!!!
Check out that VIN thread again and send the VIN to the Ford site for build sheets. The frame number is the one the DMV etc goes by. I see your title matches the door VIN, you may have a real problem.

The truck of the chassis you have (The frame vin is F26HCX88281) can be found out by contacting Ford archives.
search and see the threads on this forum that mention "Build sheets".
Phone them and wait for their letter.
as far as the axle goes I would think that axle you have would be the same as another with the same engine and other characteristics.
Yes its the chassis that I'm wanting to find out more about. I was hoping to find a quick and easy way to find out what axles it should have had (without pulling the cover) But now I see it will be easiesr to pull the cover LOL!!!! Besides the axles need new lube anyways.
About the VIN matching the door, the previous owner had it titled and registered that way so I should be able to also. Although it isnt a necessity considering this is a wood hauler and plow/farm truck. It never see's the main hyway.
