Just curious on what is going on with my father in laws truck. He has a 99 F 350 crew cab 4x4 7.3 PS and every once in a while his truck will act like it has now power. If you put your foot into it all it does is blow black smoke and not picking up speed. But if you put the truck in neutral and give it some gas then put it back into gear everything is fine and it will pick up speed. The truck has 185000 miles on it and he is afraid he needs to put a new tranny in it. I don't think so and feel it might be a sensor or something simple, since it only does it once in a while. Thanks for your help
What is the EBPV? The truck did it to me once and it was a little cold, not quite up to full operating temp. But other than the truck doing this once in a while the truck runs perfect.
The EBPV is Exhaust Back Pressure Valve.
It is a valve that closes in the exhaust outlet of the turbo to load the engine. Aids in warmup and doesn't let the engine rev when cold.
If this is closed it will have absolutely NO power, and on occasion when mine has been cold it would roll the black smoke if you got into it.
Usually makes a loud hissing sound out of the exhaust.
Totally normal and nothing to worry about if this is what's happening.
Mine opens the EBPV when I get on the pedal, as well as when I get off the pedal. Only closes when I am rolling, and don't need the power. Maybe the tube is full of soot, and not sensing when the throttle is pressed and power is needed. Not a big job, just remove the backpressure sensor (near the HPOP), and clean out the tube with some brake cleaner or carb cleaner, and some weedwacker line.
