The title say it all I have a few point of discusion with nothing related between the two, they just both happen to have come up yesterday.
The first, I drove a 300 mile round trip with 3 other guys out pheasant hunting yesterday. I filled on the way out of town and put on most of 225 miles on the hwy while the other 75 were slow putting around on prarie trails and 4 wheeling in the 2' of snow that was up there on the prarie roads. When we got back to town and filled up on of the guy look over and said " hey, $58.00 isn't to bad, heck you mad over 12mpg". Earlier in the week he had made the same trip with another buddy with his GMC 8.1 and made less then 10mpg. needless to say he was impressed and had no probelm agreeing with me that I can make 13-14 regularly on the hwy since we had done some heavy 4 wheeling while we were up there. It was a nice pat on the back come from a guy that own a 7.3 diesel!
Well after I dropped off my buddies I stopped by mom and dads for a quick one. Dad got to talking and was telling me how he thinks his 96' 460 has more power than my V10. I asked him why and he brought up a trip last year we made to go get my camper where I was running 70mpg and got to an 8% graded hill and 3rd just wasn't quite enough so I used 2nd @ 4100 rpms. He said he wouldn't have had to do that with his 460. After thinking about it for a while I remember him saying that his truck weighs 6000 lbs (reg cab 2wd Dually) while mine weighs 7100lbs. The other thing I recall was he turns 3k in OD at 70mph. I on the other hand only turn 2800rpm at 70mph in 3RD. In order for it to even be any where near the same comparison we'd have to tow the same trailer with 1100lb more in the back of his truck and he would have to tow in OD while I tow in 3rd and I'd still be giving him a slight gearing advantage, I also have a much larger truck with more wind resistance and the friction of 4wd running gear. but in his eyes his 460 is a stronger more durable engine (yet I nor anyone that he knows has ever had an engine related problem with there V10). It was gettting under my skin a little but I let it slide, it is the christmas season, lol. another whisky or two and I might of got a little defensive. one thing he won't comapare is fuel mileage, lol.
Feel free to ramble a little bit about what every pops into your head, thats what this thread is for (as long as the mods don't mid)
Well, Dad and I both had our far share of 460s. After the last joke my dad has no problems admitting the V10 is a winner.
I'm going to look for some birds today. Too many damn coyotes around to find many though...

yep it'd winner for those that have one.
for 08 NO V10 in the green states and the cross overs. and it's a fact from the dealers computer. type in code 99 it gets kicked right back out as N/A.
how does a v 10 sound with a decent exhaust on it? i've always had 460's and part of my love for em is that lovely big block sound that you just can't fake. i'm joining the army for probably just the 2 year minimum, and my truck will be paid off when i'm done. i'll be looking for a newer truck cause the old f350 4x4 is gonna get the offroad only treatment.i personnally don't like diesels so a big gas motor is the only way for me,so i guess what im getting at is do they sound good and are you happy with the performance?
I've got both a 460 and a V10, and there's no comparism in power - the 10 wins that contest hands down. Out in the fields and pastures the 460 gets the big loads, because of the 4X4 and it's ability to gear way down and lug most anything, but on the highway the V10 will leave the 460 far behind (and use way less fuel doin' it).
Now I need a V10 4X4 so I can replace both of these with one...
The truth is a V10 has a 72 degree firing sequence and sounds sort of "ricey" on most opened up mufflers... it can be tuned (the exhaust, that is) to have a decent low note rumble but I have never heard one that had the "presence" of a BB V8
That is the ONLY down side to a 6.8L V10 415 cube motor... it has more usable power much lower in the RPM band, and uses less fuel to make that power...
I owned and abused my fair share of 460 BB Ford motors and I like them a lot... However in my humble opinion the V10 is a superior motor in almost every aspect
Retired Army here... Thanks for deciding to "Join"... that road is going to be tough for the next few years... Pay attention, learn your skills, be careful, be safe, and learn all you can from the "experience". Both you and America will gain from your "service"
Merry Christmas to all, especially to fatdan460 and his family, they have a tough few years ahead....they will need our prayers...they have mine
i took a trip that was 340 miles each way this weekend....on the way up i ran 75-80 constantly having to speed up and slow down because of traffic, then about 5 percent city driving...i got 12.4 mpg
on the way back i just set the cruise at 70, never had to take it off of cruise to slow down or speed up, and about 5percent highway driving and i got 13.5 mpg
do yall think the better mileage is from the slow speed or because at the slower speed i wasnt having to pass people because people were passing me instead
the slower speed helps a-lot. I found that if I keep it under 2000 rpms I get much better mpg than I do going over 2000 rpms on long road trips, and city driving as well.
That is if one or two mpg is much better. It adds up
My 88 460 pulled an 8000 pound Fiver with much less power than my 05 V10 pulls my new 12000 pound Fiver and the 460 used about 30 % more fuel hauling 14000 pounds down the road than my V10 does hauling 21000 pounds.
The BB gas guzzlers of yesteryear are the biggest reason the Turbo diesels sold like hotcakes. When I got my 95 PSD , my fuel economy, pulling the same fiver, doubled.
Diesel fuel was cheaper than gas. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
Now, a diesel rig is lucky to get 20% more mileage than a V10 and gas is much cheaper. Than why are so many silly fools overlooking this incredible engine and going with a PSD??!! There I go, answering my own questions again. Take care.
^^^I'd believe that^^^ All I know is the last 460 was a complete dog. Passing gear wouldn't excellerate. It just went whaaaaaa seemingly slowing down with even a light load in tow! Doing at best 7mpg empty. Dual tanks and it used them daily. The p/s exhaust manifold never could be sealed. I believe there was something a miss with that one, but it really soured our opinion of the BB. Previously Dad and I had older 460s with carbs. They were fine, but the first efi was this 96 and it sucked! Dad was so dissatisfied with it he bought the 6.0psd with out hesitation. I believe he would've been happy with the V10, but that 460 blow the idea of another gas engine clean out of the water.
I do agree that the carburated 460s were better. My 88 was the first year for EFI and it was a gutless dog. I was very disapponted. It had replaced my 81 400 and that was a great truck. I ordered it from the factory and it got decent mileage towing my fiver and only had a little less power than my 460. I had expected the EFI 460 to be a real winner but I was wrong. It was very reliable and it was still on the road up to a year ago. I haven't seen it lately but now that gas is 4.00 bucks CAD a US gal, who would want to drive a 460 fuel waster.
I own both a 92 460 and an 06 v10 (both manuals) and when i drive them back to back it feels like the 460 is much quicker off the line but then the v10 is faster after that. It seems like the electronic throttle on the v10 is what causes this... Does anyone know how I can get the v10 to have the quick response of the cable-throttle 460? I think the 460 also has lower gears, but the v10 definitely has slow pickup off the line unless you have the rpms way up.

Ever think the lower gears on the 460 is why it jumps the line quicker?
Two ways I have found to make the drive by wire a little more responsive, only one is practical. I do a little pre tap on the go pedal, while I hold the brake. This will usually let me launch and tear a lot of rubber .
The other odd thing about my V10, if it idles for 5 minutes or longer , it is very responsive and that is why I burned a patch of rubber the very first time I ever drove it. It had been idling for 10 minutes while we went over it. The salesman asked me to drive it up to the main office to do the paper work.
The wife and I got in, I gave it the same amount of throttle I used to give my 04 PSD just to get it to move and SQAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!.
That was my first BSEG , my first of many. Happy New year and long live the Ford V10.
