I went to hit the gas tonight and got no response. I was told by a friend that it was my throttle position sensor? I have an 02 7.3 any suggestions or helpful hints?
Usually a TPS failure will give you dead spots on the gas pedal.
For a 7.3, the TPS is mounted inside the cab of the truck at the top of the gas pedal linkage.
You can actually check them and see if they're any good if you've got an ohm meter. All you do is unplug the sensor and probe the pins with the ohm meter. I think there's three on there, so you'll have to experiment to get the right combination. If you push down on the gas pedal nice and slow, the resistance should move with you in a smooth manner. I like to check stuff like that with an old school sweep type meter, but a digital will work fine. You don't want any places where the readings go to infinite or any real sudden changes.
Don't forget to have a look at the wiring around that sensor when you're under the dash. It would sure be a shame to go through all that for a chafed wire or a plug that fell out/got dirty.
I had the same problem a while back in 03. When I recycled power it came back to life, for a few days and then the TPS failed again. My problem was covered under warranty, or maybe a recall, I don’t remember. If you have to change it your self it about a 5 minute job.
The 03 for sure had a recall on the throttle pedal assembly. If it is the tps you have to replace the whole pedal assemble. Get it from the stealership, surprisingly cheap from them, about 85 bucks. I couldn't find it any cheaper on the internet. There are a couple different ones depending on year and if they are adjustable or not, some have one plug and some have two. Three bolts and one or two plugs and your done in a couple of minutes.
