I am soliciting advice on towing a 25 foot bed (34 foot overall), double dually axle, 20,000 capacity gooseneck trailer with my '06 F250SD Crew Cab, 8 foot bed, standard transmission. Empty trailer weight is approximately 2,100 pounds and typical load weight will initially be about 6,500 pounds. Any and all information regarding driving (speeds, RPM's/shift points, maximum distances without stopping, etc.), maintenance, and modifications (eg. engine chip, tires/wheels, etc.) would be appreciated. Current powertrain is completely stock.
First off what motor?
get gauges. if diesel Pyro, at least
CDL because even if it aint loaded to 20k...20k+10k=30k=reqiuers CDL(at least in OR)
how many miles. (is it broken in yet)
You should not have to do any mods to make it tow the load you mentioned safely. However you could look into a lot of mods if you want it to tow better.
However I am pretty sure you will need a CDL to tow it legally, I think max combined weight is 26k. This is regardless of what you actually have on the trailer, they go by what it is capable of.
I would say egt. gauge would help out alot, make sure your truck isn't strainin too much. If you want to add performance stuff later, then that is one step you dont have to do, it is however a cheap precaution.
Thanks for the responses. I'll look into the CDL. Title says "Empty weight 2685 Gross Weight 9072," whatever that really means with a 20,000 Lb. trailer. I'm strongly considering bigger tires (such as BFG A/T 305's or 315's?) and the BullyDog chip. Any comments would be deeply appreciated. Thanks
