my truck has an fmx trans. the past few weeks i was having to wind it out for it to change gears, slow down just a bit and it would downshift. adjusting the kickdown rod, and even taking it off made no changes. today i drove it to the store and when i got back to the driveway, all the trans fluid started pouring out the front of the trans and up in smoke it went. anybody have any clue what happened?
That should be a C-6 as they replaced the FMX back in 68.
You want nothing to do with one as rebuilding costs more than
a C-6 which is common and a better transmission.
You check the modulator and the vacuum signal to it, rubber hoses in
good condition with a tight fit? Trans fluid in the hose to the modulator, a ruptured modulator diaphragm?
Sounds like it might of got hot and you lost the seal between the convertor and pump. The big pump body seal to case is a known leak area.
Fluid smell burnt and darker than new fluid?
I checked it out yesterday, looks like i lost the pump body seal. The fluid is burnt almost black. Its not the original trans, its not a c4 or a c6, and it has a removable bell housing. Someone told me it was an fmx so I took there word for it. Anyway I picked up a good small block c6 yesterday for 150 bucks. Sound like a deal?
Black fluid, it's toast!
It will cost a lot less to rebuild that C-6 plus parts
are avilable vs that FMX box, good find.
Flush any coolers your running before hooking
up that trans. Might want to check the convertor
to pump bushing, the least is replace the seal and
check the convertor neck where the seal rides for grooves
plus pull the pan, check bottom of pan for particles and replace
the filter.
