I don't want to hijack this thread but can anyone tell us just what is cutting oil? How does it differ from lubricating oil and what kinds of oil should be used in different types of metal?
Cutting oil is basicaly regular moter oil thats been thined down a bit.It cools and lubricates the bit and also washes away fragments of metal that can dull the bit
If I were you, I would look for an actual tool store, use a phone book. In my opinion, Lowes, Home depot etc sell toys for yuppie garages, not any real metal fab tools. Follow the advise above about slow speeds.
My grandpa, always said that specialty oils were a load of crap (he would have used several explicatives, but you get the point).
For tempering stuff I use old oil because the carbon deposits in it help to harden the metal. I assume it does the same thing for drill bits and such, but if you keep everything cool it should never become a problem.
Someday I'm gunna try out some of that cutting oil, just as soon as I run out of used motor oil.
For tapping cream I generaly use lythium grease. It doesn't work all that well, but It's close to the bench, and the hardware store is a really long walk.
