Question full-time 4wheel drive

I have a question for you guys. Does antbody out there know if it is possible to take my full time hubs out and replace them with lockouts? Ibelieve i have the E4OD yransmission, because I have the pushbutton 4wd.I thought maybe changing to part-time hubs might help my gas mileage.

Smile 92 F150

I recently bought my 92 F150. It has the 5.0L with I believe it to be the E4OD transmission, which may become trouble later by what I've heard and read on the forum. This truck has 156,600 miles and just recently I had the heater core and water pump replaced because I couldn't get any heat , but even with it's problems I still love the truck!

I dont think you have an e4od with a 5.0 you probably have just an AOD. AOD= PRNOD1 E4OD= PRNO21 and is usually used along with the 351 in the f150s. Sorry I cant answer your question I thought id just clear up the transmission uncertanty.

Original question: Is it ok to remove stock hubs for lock-outs on full time 4wd?

Probably, but you won't save enough gas doing it to recoup the cost of the lock-outs for a loooonnnggg time.

Other gas-saving tricks would work better, and cost nothing.

As for your trans, imo, any auto with over 150k on it is living on borrowed time.

There are a number of mods that can be done on either the AOD, AODE or E4OD at rebuild time to strengthen them if strength is an issue.

What is this full time 4wd you speak of? I have only ever heard of manual and automatic hubs for these trucks, never full time 4wd. Can you shift your transfer case to 2wd? If so you have part time 4wd. If your front axles are not unlocking then they are stuck and need service. This would certainly hurt fuel milage.

Yeah, I'm confused as well. In the late 70's there was a full time 4wd option that came with a differential-style transfer case, but that was over long before 1992. You either have manual or automatic hubs - both of which are part-time - and either a manual or electronic transfer case.

What's your definition of a lockout?

I bought a 1994 Ford F-150 4x4 with the 5.0 and auto. trans. The fellow I bought it from replaced the automatic front hubs with Warn manual lock in/lock out hubs. He told me it didnt have any measureable affect on gas mileage at all..The truck gets about 13.0 mpg and thats driving like a lil' ole lady

Hey guys lets go easy. He is new here and he is learning a lot.

The Warn conversion is worth it if you rely on 4x4 often (weekly mud or snow). Otherwise, put the autos to use once a month to keep everything lubed.

Sorry for the confusion guys I'm used to the old ways. I've only ever had trucks with lockout hubs before. My overdrive trans has aswitch on the gear selector that allows me to turn the overdrive on or off, that is what led me to believe it was an E4OD. Thanks for all the info, based on what everyone has said I'll just look for better gas mileage in other ways

That would make it an E4OD. You have automatic locking hubs, which are junk.Just go ahead and put lockouts on.My auto hubs use to try to automatically lock going down the road for no reason. No since taking a chance on them not working when you really need them.As far as the old full time 4 wheel drive,I never saw a jump in mieage after converting to part time, but it did save alot of wear on the front end.

OK.. sound like this truck has auto hubs then. Try something. With the truck in 2wd and parked, crawl under it and try to turn the front driveshaft... it should rotate freely, as should each drive axle in the front end. Basically all the front drivetrain should be disconnected in 2wd and present no load to the vehicle. If they are not unlocked and won't do so when the truck is driven in reverse then they are broken and need to be replaced. The other possibility with an electric shift transfer case is that it's not actually shifting out of 4wd. That's verified by turning the front drieshaft.

Maybe he has a 4R70W tranny like my 96?, was that available in 92? I have the pushbutton 4x4 with auto hubs, everything works great but I do drop it in 4x4 and low range once a month on my dirt road to keep everything in running order....It's really nice to be full auto 4x4 when it's snowing, no frozen hubs to fight with - just push the button and pass the dummie's with their summer tires...LOL

Thanks for alot of good info guys! When I bought this truck, the push button 4wd was a good reason. I've had other 4wd's with the typical transfer case and my wife somehow always managed to get it into neutral. I figured this would be easier for her to operate!
