Got several Clubwagon E350 15 passenger vans (some 7.3 Diesel & 7.5) W/O the seats they weigh around 6000#. According to the FORD Dealer the F350 & the E350 have the same engine & tranny. I notice F350's towing 6 ton trailers. I tow a 4 ton trailer & buy other vans at times, so my total trailer/load weight is around 8000#. I have a 6 ton trailer (2200# & 20' long) with a GI hitch (pintle I think it is called) & want to pull it with the vans. Think it will pull the 6 ton trailer with a van on it?
Axles are 33 & C3 & according to the chart this is a 3.54 ratio. Tranny is the E40D.
At many tractor supply stores and trailer dealers you can get a receiver adapter that has a PLATE on it with the 6 holes pre-drilled for a pintle. I opted to put what's called a "Pintle/Ball" combo on mine. it incorporated a trailer ball into the pintle so I don't have to keep switching back and forth. If the trailer has brakes, and they work properly, it should work, but you may also want to upgrade your tires to a multi-ply with a higher load rating. Since you don't have duals, stability may be an issue, and the higher-load-rated-tires may help compensate., since they'll have stiffer sidewalls.
If my dad pulled a 18 foot long box trailer full of stuff from his house, and then a van load on top of it (weighed over 15k pounds van and trailer) with an E150 (that's a 1/2 ton) Club wagon with a 302 you should have NO problems pulling that load with your van.
I guess when I go into unchartered waters I do not want to make a major mistake & destroy a tranny or differential. Anyway, thanks. It is not something that I will be pulling on a regular basis, just occasionally I will buy a van & transport it home.
You should have no problems at all. Like has been said before just make sure you have brakes on the trailer. We've used our 1/2 ton vans (302 and 351 powered) to get vehicles home a lot. We even used one to move my sister from the mountains in PA back to indiana.
