i have a 88 ford 150 with a inline 6 and the mazda 5 sp. tranny. just recently i have noticed that the clutch pedal is getting softer, does not return fully to the top, goes down about 1/2 way before any real predssure and will disengageabout 1 inch from the floor. cheked the m.c. and while slightly down was still about 3/4 of an inch fron the top. i crawled underneath and did find signs of leakage from the slave cylinder so i know i have a problem here.my question is as i am virtually positive that no air got into the system would the slave alone cause these problems. sam
Could be the slave cyl. or master cyl. but get back under and check how much free play you have in the throwout arm. It may be that wear here is causing the slave cyl. to extend nearly half way out before starting to release the clutch.
Plus being a sealed system, by it leaking, you have already introduced air into the system. As you depress the pedal, pressure builds moving the cylinder, and causing the fluid to leak if there is a place that it can go. When the pedal comes back up, the same amount of fluid is suppose to come back into the master resevoir, but because some has escaped from the system, something has to come back in to replace the volume, and the fluid that replaces it would be air.
