Not new to (Diesel) Fords but...considering a 06 or even a 07 F150 S-Crew 5.4 Triton 4x4 6.5 Bed Auto-Trans w/355 gears.
I'm very easy on the throttle and braking so what kind of real-world MPG could I expect? AND...will the 5.4 burn regular grade gas or, does it require Premium?
Thanks for any info...first time considering owning a gas Truck since 1988. I just don't need the BIG F-250 Diesel anymore or, the high cost of the fuel it requires to use it.
Most of the new 5.4's run regular or flex. You will not need premium unless you put in a chip at performance levels. The average mpg is around 10-13 city and 15-20 highway but mine is much less 'cause of my heavy right foot. Hey - it's a truck man! I really don't ever look at MPG because it's too depressing
My 04 gets about 11-13 in town, and about 14-16 on the highway. I have the FX4 with the 3.73 gears. While the 3.55's may be ok for normal driving, if your going to tow anything I would take a look at the 3.73's. And just remember with the mileage issue, this is a VERY heavy truck for a half ton. Mine hit the scale at 5975 empty.
Great info fellas...thanks.
With an easy foot...I was hoping to see in the high teens HWY and mid teens City...reason the only thing I can recall is my ex girlfriends Expedition 2000 easily got 19 HWY towing a Motorcycle trailer from Philly to Fla and back, hand calculated by me. And as I seem to remember, local city driving MPG was very impressive also.
I know I'm not comparing apples to apples but aren't those two vehicles built on the same frame...kinda?
Hmmm, I wonder if the V6 would serve me ...I only tow the 21' Race boat few times a Summer.

3.73 gears with limited slip and 5.4 only way to go. runs great on 87 octane, didn't notice any improvement using 91/92 octane for 3 tanks, so I've been running 87 every since.
you'll kick yourself if you buy a v-6 with the F-150. very heavy truck and the 6 just can't compare to the 8. not even the 4.6 can compare to the 5.4
on regular gas I'll get 15ish mixed driving and upwards of 19 on the highway only. since the winter blends of gas have come out, I've seen my mpg go down to 12 in city, 15-16 highway
alot of people who get bad mileage on this forum also seem to live in areas with high ethanol in the gas, and/or they have the early model 04's that had issues.

Great info above about the engine size and gears...thanks, and good to know the big V-8 likes the 87 cotane!
I spoke with a few 5.4 owners (4)...they all said, in the hot summer months they have what sounds like a valve tap at idle.
What's up with that...common w/the 5.4
One stated, especially when he tows in the summer.
The injectors do make a fairly noticeable ticking at idle, at least on my truck, maybe that is what they are hearing? All of our gas around here is 10% ethanol, and my truck is an 04 that has never been flashed, so I could be low on mileage based on those 2 factors. But what I can say is, we went and picked up a Jeep last weekend with a car dolly, 4 big guys in the cab, lots of hills, and locked out of OD, and it got just over 13 mpg. Still haven't figured that one out yet.
