transfer case mounting plate?

lining parts to swap out the 203 in my 74 for a dana 24 and was wondering if the mounting plates from my 203 could be used with some new holes drilled as the mounting studs appear to be spaced differently on the 2 units

why would you want to swap in a dana 24? id either stick with the np203 or go to an np205, the np203 is a heck of a transfer case, and i miss mine. i have an np205 now and it just doesnt have the same road feel not being full time 4x4

Not to argue darrin but you CAN'T go wrong with a NP205. I can see where you'd not like it though switching from a NP203. I've always have 205's and 208's and switching to the 203 was horrible for me....I couldn't get used to it for the life of me. Always felt like the truck was dragging something to me I got rid of that one. As for the Dana 24....Never had one so I can't advise on that situation.

whats wrong with a 24 ,its basically a 205 cept it has 2 lo whereas the 205 dont as far as from what i've read. both gear drive tc's and very stout.i had 3 races last year where the 203 kept popping out of lo loc ,it's also been converted to part time too. could of finished much higher than 7th for the year .time for the 203 to go

They're not even made by the same manufacturer? Hense the names "DANA 24" and "NEW PROCESS 205". My buddy had problems with his 24 binding up in his 71, so he junked it in favor of a 205. he was running a mild 390.

i've never disagreed with darrin until now.a 205 for what you are doing would be alot sturdier.a 203 is a breakage waiting to happen.i take it you are mud dragging or bogging?i would put a 208 in before a 203.208's have alot lower low 2.64:1.don't know about 24's.if they are gear drive the durability would be there.

yes 208's are very low geared, almost too low.

just depends on his axle gearing and tire size, and what he's doing with the truck.the 208 is a nice working tcase and i've seen people abuse the crap out of them and they hold up to more than 203's.a friend of mine in a glass jeep broke 2 203's this year and he only has a 383 with a little nitrous.i've seen big blocks with the bottle run 208's and have only seen one break.that was behind a 510 with bigger diggers in a long box truck.

I have a BONE STOCK 351w in my 82 3/4 ton with 36's and 4.10 gears and broke my 208.... No locked axles either both open. I just don't like chain drive tcases in general.

had it ever been gone thru?they are pretty durable.i run a 205 in my bronco and don't have any worries.between a203 and a 208 i don't think it is even close.203's are junk.

IMO 203's are stronger, but I don't like the fulltime 4x4 feature at all. Just my experience, aside from chain issues Ive never seen 203 issues, and the chain is why i don't like them anyway. Yes the 208 got a new chain(fully rebuilt) at the beginning of last season after the old chain let go. it went all summer eventless but then KABOOM. in went the 205

True- but very hard to say that a 205 isn't the best in these trucks.

plus the 205 will bolt directly where the 203 was, so you wouldnt have to worry about a plate. i had my 203 in a 78 dodge 4x4 with a 400, i just like the feel of a full time 4x4 rather than part time... it may cost some power but it just feels more solid to me... and it went through more snow than my friend's part time chevy with better tires- especially in low lock but id totally swap to a 205 if i were him- especially since the 203 is a part time conversion

not quite sure what your looking at darrin but my 203 has 4 studs that attach to a mounting plate which in turn attaches to the bottom of the crossmember.the mounting studs are spaced differently between the 203 and 205 .never knew they had a divorced 208. just doing mud bogs for now .running 4.10's and 35's in a street stock class
