Hi everyone was driving home today in my f 150 everything going fine and all at once shedied on me. no sputtering or rough idle just died. towed her home and will turn over fine but not hit a lick. need to get her back on the road . she has 98000 on her never done anything major to her. thanks Tommy
Yes, it can. There could be other factors but I would start with that one.
Another possibility would be timing. That would take a major slip for that to happen. If it cranks faster than usual that is a sign the timing has changed and it's not building compression.

yeah, probably a fuel pump. Try whacking on the gas tank with a large rubber hammer while someone cranks it. Thats what we do at the dealership. When it starts you're gonna have to keep the rpms at like 1500 to keep it running.
If you're gonna do it yourself, if the gas tank is full you are gonna want it at least half empty, the less fuel the better. There should be no special tools needed for this job. It will take no more than 3 hours.
you can probably get away with a fuel pump, you dont need the whole fuel sending unit.
Does the fuel pump run when the key is turned to RUN? If not, it's either a fuel pump problem or a fuel relay problem. Due to the sudden death, probably a relay problem. Pull relay and check/replace.
Did the engine cough and die or just flat out die?
i did try to listen for the pump to come on. all i could hear was a kinda like a click noise when the switch was turned on. i have a chevy flatbed truck that you can clearly hear it run and then shut off but this does not make that kind of sound. where is the relay located at? thanks for all your help. Tommy
no not yet due to the holidays and all the dinners i have not had much time to look at it. we did listen to the pump when turning the key on and all we heard was a clicking kina clunk sound. we did pull a plug out after turning the engine over and it was dry. any ideas or help of any kind is welcomed. do you actually here the pump running when you turn the key on? thanks tommy
Ok, not sure if it is ok to post this suggestion or not but here goes. If you aren't sure of fuel delivery let's give it some! Get to the throttle plate by removing whatever is necessary. Have someone press on gas pedal to open throttle fully. Grab a can of carb spray and count 2 seconds while spraying into intake past open throttle plate. Release gas pedal. Put everything back together again and attempt to start it. If it starts, you are dealing with fuel delivery issue. If not, mechanical issue. Be careful while doing this test for obvious reasons. Have extinguisher near just in case. If you aren't thrilled with this procedure, pull a vacuum hose that is on plenum and inject using spray tube. I have performed this test before to quickly find out if vehicle has fuel issues. If you have questions just post.
